An earthquake in a central Italian city killed 309 people in April 2009. In October 2012, three seismologists, two engineers, a volcanologist and a public official were given prison sentences of six years. They are accused of being sloppy in their analysis and not letting people know that a big quake was going to hit the town soon.
The experts had told people not to worry about the tremors they felt. They told people to go home and relax with a good glass of wine. Therefore, instead of going to a safer place, they stayed and died.
