An extension of the Louvre Museum will open next week in Lens. Lens is a small mining town in northern France. The new museum is 7,000 square metres. It will display some of the finest treasures from the Louvre’s home in Paris.
The 150 million pound project has raised concerns. People say the museum is too big for such a small town. Lens’ unemployment rate is 16 %. Recession-hit local businesses have hesitated to invest. They are concerned that visitors to the Louvre will not linger in the town. They must succeed in getting visitors to go to the town center.
