Resurgence of Tourism in Sri Lanka スリランカの観光事業の再起

Sri Lanka has seen 25 years of civil war. However, the last few years of peace have helped the country’s tourism industry recapture some of its past splendor.

In July 2009, barely two months after the end of the violence, there was a 28% increase in tourist traffic in comparison with July 2008. As the news spread that peace is back in Sri Lanka, there was a sudden increase in the number of visitors to the country. According to the latest figures from Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Sri Lanka hosted 1,274,593 tourists during 2013. The government expects 2.5 million visitors by 2016.

To achieve this target, the government has chalked out a plan to enhance the services of SriLankan Airlines, the country’s official air carrier, so that it can build a network with other global airlines to ferry passengers from across the world.

Apart from providing employment, the tourism industry helps strengthen SMEs and the cottage industry. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Sri Lankan government is going all out to back this industry.
