John Bates Clark Medal 2014 ジョン・ベイツ・クラーク賞2014

The American Economic Association (AEA) awards the John Bates Clark medal each year to an American economist under the age of 40 for the most noteworthy contribution to economic thought and knowledge. This year, the AEA honored Matthew Gentzkow, an economist at the University of Chicago, for his work on the volatile economics of the news business.

According to Gentzkow’s theory, the hardships being faced by newspapers are not entirely due to the arrival of the Internet and free alternative access to online news. It is true that the time spent in reading newspapers reduced by half between 1980 and 2012, but most of this slump occurred prior to 2000 when the Internet was at a budding stage. Conversely, when the time spent on the Internet rose between 2008 and 2012, the time devoted to newspapers dropped far more gradually.

According to Gentzkow’s study, most customers turn to conventional sources for at least some of their news, such as reports on the weather, sports or business. Gentzkow’s theory strengthens the basic point that what readers want most is to be informed.
