A Li-ion battery consists of two electrodes (an anode and a cathode), where the anode is made up of graphite and the cathode is lithium cobalt oxide. However, Yi Cui’s team intends to increase the lithium content substantially by having a lithium anode and a sulfur cathode. That will increase power because lithium-metal anodes have the highest energy-storing capacity of any known material.
Although lithium has a high chemical reactivity and is therefore a great fire hazard, Dr Cui and his team plan to make it safer by covering the lithium anode either in a thin film (5,000 times thinner than a human hair) or by using boron nitride or grapheme.
Dr Cui is confident that his team’s research will ultimately lead to mass production of a powerful and safe lithium battery.
