Meticulous Japan

Japan is a county that prides itself on being meticulous. This is evident when we look at the intricate designs of kimono, the folds of paper to make origami, and the way products are packaged and wrapped. The attention given to even the smallest of details is an endearing character of this country, and is one of the reasons Japan is loved and respected around the world. The same can be said in the Japanese approach to learning.

People strive for perfection and that is a very admirable aim. However, perfection should be seen as an end goal and not something that needs to be achieved every step along the way, especially when it comes to English.

After all, language is a tool used to exchange ideas. Communication in a second language is not easy, but we must remember that the aim is to be understood and making mistakes in the process is natural.

In recent weeks, much attention has been given to a get well message sent via Twitter to US President Trump from Japanese Prime Minister Suga. Critics went on the attack, some saying the grammar tense was wrong. while others claimed the sentences were “childish.” The important question here is could his message be understood; the answer is yes. Remember that we learn more from failures than we do from successes. The next time you need to communicate in English, take chances, learn from mistakes… and ignore the critics.
